Resumo

Introduction: .Dental care is still directed to children of school age leaving millions of adults without specifi c policies and plans.Objective: To describe oral health and the socioeconomic profi le of the adult population (18-60 years old) resident in the Figueirinha neighborhood, located in the city of Xangri-Lá, RS.Methodology: longitudinal observational study with a sample of 250 people attended by the Basic Health Unit of Figueirinha in the city of Xangri-Lá, RS.Results: Of the total sample, 38.6% are men with a mean age of 37.7 years and 61.3% are women with a mean age of 39.5 years.94.3% had no lesions in soft tissues.Visible plaque was found in 62.6% and gingival bleeding occurred in 56%.The reported frequency of toothbrushing was 2 to 3 times a day by 60% of the sample, and 74.78% reported that they have never received oral hygiene education.Edentulism was present in 13.4% of the sample, and the mean loss is of 9 teeth per person.53.9% were caries, in a mean of two decayed teeth per person.82% had not completed primary education and 10% are illiterate.59.5% reported having an income of one to two minimum wages.Conclusion: Through this survey it was possible to identify a profi le of poor oral health and socioeconomic status of the young and mature adult population resident in the Figueirinha neighborhood: low income and education level, with high levels of visible plaque, bleeding gums, tooth decay and tooth loss.
