ResumoWhat follows is the text of a paper I presented at Lincoln Center in November 1979 at the annual conference of the American Society for Theatre Research. My discussion here is partly intended as a response to Daniel E. Cashman's article, Grotowski: His Twentieth Anniversary (TJ 31 [1979], 460-66), a report and evaluation of experiences in January 1979 with the premiere of the Teatr Laboratorium's Tree of People project. But more importantly, perhaps, it intends another view of Tree of People (or Drzewo Ludzi, as I refer to it below)--and possibly something of an explanation for Cashman's particular perception.1
