ResumoDuellman (1969) described Hyla carnifex from Provincia de Pichincha, Ecuador, and Cochran and Goin (1970) described H. bogerti from Departamento de Antioquia, Colombia. Goin (1970) erroneously considered H. bogerti to be preoccupied and proposed the replacement name H. charlesbogerti. Duellman (1974) showed that such a change was unnecessary, and reinstated the name H. bogerti. Duellman (1974) synonymized H. bogerti with H. carnifex but did not justify that conclusion. Duellman and Trueb (1983) provided the justification by showing that these two species shared two characters, namely, ventral coloration and flank pattern. I believe that the synonymization of Hyla bogerti and H. carnifex needs confirmation because Duellman and Trueb (1983) examined only faded and poorly-preserved specimens of H. bogerti, because a very wide hiatus (ca. 700 km) still separates H. bogerti and H. carnifex, and because the presence of shared similarities is not sufficient to synonymize two species; different species can share similarities (i.e., synapomorphies). The purpose of this study is to clarify the specific status of the Colombian population referred to Hyla carnifex.
