T HE late Jackson Harold Ainsworth collected two salamanders 2 Mi S. of Bay Springs, Mississippi on 12 June 1964. At that time, Ainsworth was collecting forJ. William Cliburn, University of Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg. The two specimens, labeled Plethodon glutinosus, were eventually transferred to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science (MMNS), Jackson, where I found them in early 1991. Ainsworth's two individuals, despite their label, were instantly recognizable as distinctive and peculiar.
