It suggests that landscape visualizations may communicate planning subjects more comprehensively than two-dimensional maps, but the use of these techniques raises new questions on their perception, interaction and integration within the planning process. These open questions are the subject of the EU-project VisuLands, which is applying landscape visualizations to current planning tasks in the Swiss UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Entlebuch. As part of a case study, settlement patterns, attacks on spruce forests by bark beetles and agricultural development trends were chosen as topics for exploring the strengths of visualization techniques. The technical possibilities of various degrees of realism, different stages of interactivity and integrated representations of indicators are discussed. In conclusion, it is proposed that complementing participation methods with landscape visualization techniques can offer benefits for all stakeholders who are involved in planning decisions.
