Resumo

Editor: Regarding the viewpoints of Dr. Robert McNamara (“Heroes or Traitors?” EMN 2009;31[4]:6) and Dr. Lynn Massingale (“TeamHealth Proud to Honor EM Heroes.” EMN 2009;31[4]:6) about the heroes of emergency medicine supplement sponsored by TeamHealth in ACEP News, both physicians miss the point. The point is that the real heroes of emergency medicine were not recognized. They are not the resident educators, EMS leaders, legislative activists, association officers, or so-called physician leaders. Who are they? Perhaps the TeamHealth insert would have been more effective if it had been one page: a mirror. Each emergency physician could look in the mirror and see who the true hero of emergency medicine is: you, me, and every other emergency physician who works day and night in the trenches. Those who Dr. Edwin Leap says will “Pull Out the Spear, Even if No One Else Will.” (EMN 2009;31[4]:19.) I consider Dr. Leap a true hero of emergency medicine, and Dr. Dan Caliendo as well, who wrote an outstanding letter thanking Dr. George Hossfeld for his editorial. Jon K.
