ResumoThe question of an incompatibility mechanism in the Myxomycetes was first raised by Pinoy in 1908 when he reported sexual dimorphism in Didymium nigripes.4 Skupienski (1926), working with monosporous cultures of Didymium difforme, concluded that the organism was heterothallic. The careful work of von Stosch (1935) with Didymium nigripes seemed to establish the existence of a 1-locus, 2-allele type of heterothallism in this species. Nevertheless, because of contradictory results obtained by other workers, presumably with the same species (Kerr and Sussman, 1958), heterothallism in the Myxomycetes remained a controversial subject until Dee (1960), working with Physarum polycephalum, and Collins (1961), working with Didymium iridis, definitely proved that an incompatibility mechanism does exist in the Myomycetes. Collins (1963) went on to establish the fact that multiple alleles are present at the incompatibility locus in D. iridis. Preliminary studies of Physarum flavicomum indicated that this organism is also heterothallic. Inasmuch as a number of specimens were available, some from widely separated geographical areas, it was decided to study the mating type system of this myxomycete.
