Resumonumbers of shorebirds compared to the 10-year average. Shorebird populations do seem to fluctuate in an almost cyclical pattern from year-toyear as they move through Texas, but it is unlikely that the majority of the species would bottom out in their respective cycles simultaneously. Loss of major habitat in migration may be affecting the migrant's ability to successfully refuel enroute to the nesting or wintering grounds leading to a reduced population. A concentrated effort is in order to prevent further and more drastic population reductions. Conservationists might be well advised to locate and develop alternative foraging sites along the migration route, and Cheyenne Bottoms should be given top priority when attempts are made to rejuvenate desirable staging grounds for shorebird migration.
