ResumoBiological quality of rivers in western Switzerland indicated by the diversity of zoobenthos: the 1991 -1993 surveys.-Total number of taxa and number of taxa intolerant of pollutions (Plecoptera, Trichoptera with a case, and Heptageniidae), combined in the RIVAUD index, were used to measure the diversity of invertebrate communities in 47 rivers of western Switzerland (canton of Vaud).According to diversity, biological quality was good in 40% out of the 167 sites visited in 1991 -1993.However, this proportion decreased from 66% above the altitude of 710 m to 9% below 450 m.This downward decrease was due to the increase of anthropogenic impacts.Diversity was higher in 1991Diversity was higher in -1993Diversity was higher in than in 1988Diversity was higher in -1990.But this improvement was attributed to a more favorable meteorology rather than to a decrease of pollutions.
