ResumoIn Siena in the later trecento, there were no longer great commissions for painters or large workshops. Altarpieces usually repeated the scenes and layout of the earlier age. Patrons were now not the Church or city but guilds and confraternities. They might call for non-standard iconography and layout for specific or local needs, and this led to spectacular innovations in altarpieces by Bartolo di Fredi, the most prolific master of the time. Two of these, both for the church of S. Francesco in Montalcino, can be reconstructed with the aid of carpentry and documentary studies.
