Resumo"Critical study of isolated plant fossils can throw light on problems of coal formation which are difficult to solve by direct attack on coal itself. In the individual plant fragment, such as a limb or a leaf embedded in matrix, we can infer the original distribution of different types of plant tissue and may be able to determine what has happened to each since burial, but in coal the residue of diverse types of plant tissue are mixed in a confused mass. This paper discusses some of the special types of plant preservation that throw light on the alteration of plant tissues into coal."
