ResumoThe Altichiero frescoes which conclude the cycle of Saint James are remarkable for the number of portraits of contemporaries in the service of the court — including Petrarch, King Louis the Great of Hungary, the ruling family of the Carrara, and the ambitious patron, Bonifacio Lupi. The main issue of Paduan politics in the 1370's, the war against Venice and the Paduan alliance with Hungary, provides the impetus. The values of the signorial state are reflected and an insight is offered into late trecento views of monarchy, particularly those held by Petrarch.
