Resumothis is the first of a series of papers treating a number of aspects of Blackfoot Indian musical culture. The first two papers are concerned with the uses of music in Blackfoot life and with musical functions and musical behavior. An attempt has been made to distinguish the patterns presumably present before the Blackfoot became simply another of the many American minorities-that is, before 1900-from the situation in the 1960's. The paper at hand deals with these earlier manifestations, largely on the basis of ethnographic literature and the statements of elderly informants who searched their memories for information from their childhood.
