Resumo

This paper examines the "tombs in the rocks" of Isa 57:5-6. Weise saw here an example of chiasmus, but paranomasia may provide a better explanation of the prophet's intent. At a later stage a redactor added 57:1-2 to change the confrontation between God and Israel into a contrast between the righteous and the wicked. A study of Iron Age and Persian period tombs makes more explicit the circumstances to which these verses allude and clarifies the nature of the idolatry the prophet condemns.
