Resumo

Abortion is one of the main factors responsible for high maternal morbimortality rates. Being a polemic public health problem, little information is known about its occurrence. This study aimed to evaluate the distribution of abortion diagnoses per Region, State and City by means of hospital morbidity rates in 2006. A survey was carried out on the total number of hospitalizations in the Single Health System (SUS) among women of fertile age, whose main diagnosis for hospitalization was abortion. We observed a higher hospitalization rate per 1000 women of fertile age in the Northeast. Amapa was rated highest in the classification of Brazilian states. A list of the 50 cities with the highest rates revealed that, various states, register no cities Whereas Bahia presents 17 cities, followed by Roraima with five cities. Results point to the need for access to education and ready access to Integral Women Health Services
