Resumo

Middletown is strategically located on the banks of the Connecticut River in the central part of Connecticut. Middletown has a tradition as a maritime center. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the banks of the Connecticut River in Middletown were lined with working docks and cargo storage warehouses. As commerce and transportation changed, Middletown, not unlike numerous waterfront communities, turned its back on the River. Subsequent development, particularly an adjacent state highway, created barriers to riverfront access and water dependent land uses. Riverfront revitalization began in Middletown during the 1970's. Construction of 1500 feet of new bulkheading and riverfront boardwalks highlight 'Harborpark' which also includes a popular restaurant, waterfront park, and berthing facilities for excursion vessels and rowing crews. The subject of this paper is the conceptual plan which seeks to continue the process of riverfront revitalization in Middletown.
