ResumoThe hypoglycemic effect of taurine was discovered in 1935 by Ackerman and Heisen1. Dokshina et al. 3 found later in the seventies that taurine increased glucose consumption in diaphragm tissue and glycogen accumulation by leukocytes and liver. Kulakowski and Maturo7 in the eighties also described insulin-like activity of taurine. Lampson, Kramer and Schaffer5 found that taurine potentiated the effect of insulin and influenced activity of phosphorylase a and glycogen synthase I.
