ResumoIn recent decades, the portuguese rural areas have seen pronounced changes, which reformed the traditional environment of those territories. These innovations can create new opportunities, but also have highlighted spatial fragmentation and reduced local communities power, decreasing the access of people to resources. Far beyond the idea of depopulation, this multifunctional rurality is done by multiple non-harmonious agents, following heterogeneous interests and territorialities. That fact is a challenge for spatial planning. Key words: rural, multifunctionality, agents, conflicts.
