Resumo

In recent decades, amid the recent changes in Brazilian countryside, the importance of so-called family farms has strengthened considerably.In the district of Santa Flora, family farming permeates different productive arrangements, where they develop numerous agricultural activities.Many of these activities, along the history of the district has constituted as the staple diet of the local population and, at the same time, as an important source of income generation.Farmers that practice family farming, do it by adopting a set of strategies, either to develop them or to obtain greater autonomy.In this qualitative study, it is aimed at making a theoretical and practical reflection about the strategies that have enabled the permanence of family farming permeating the development of certain activities amid the ongoing transformations in the district of Santa Flora.In this sense, this study reinforces the inclusion of numerous farmers into incentive programs for rural production at the municipal level as well as the commercialization of their products in different parts of the urban area of the municipality of Santa Maria.
