By use of 1 H and 13 CNMR the main water-soluble carbohydrate components extracted from Smallanthus sonchifolia were identified as oligofructans ( α-D-Glc p-(1 � 2)-[β-D-Fru f-(2 � 1)- β -D-Fruc f]n- β -D-Fru f) and mannitol.
