Resumo

This paper discusses a possible reading of Camilo Castelo Branco's first novel, Anátema, published in 1851.The account of D. Ines's life, a young woman who, before her father's refusal to let her marry the Earl of S. Vicente, sees her entire routine changed and taken by suffering and revenge, culminating in her death, shows a typical Camillian approach of amorous misadventures, if we consider what Jacinto do Prado Coelho and other scholars say of the Camillian work. The aim of this paper is to discuss how this narrative nears the gothic matrix, insofar as it evokes elements of its romanesque line.Focusing on the representation of space, it intends to point out how elements considered as marks of the gothic narrative are explored in the novel in question, setting thus an opportunity to discuss about the novel from Portuguese literature.
