Resumois the only member of the genus Macrogenioglottus (Frost, 2015). The species is large, reaching about 11 cm and is considered a rare species due to his low capture rate in the places where it occurs (Forlani et al. 2010). It has a short snout and a dark brown body, with granules in the dorsolateral region (Dixo & Verdade, 2006). The species’ type locality is the municipality of Ilheus, state of Bahia, Brazil (Carvalho, 1946). It occurs in the morphoclimatic domains of the Atlantic Rainforest (Bourgerois, 2010; Frost, 2015). This genus was considered by Lynch (1971) as a junior synonym of Odontoprhynus. However, this same author reconsidered his decision later and resurrected the genus (Lynch, 1973). Subsequently, Silva et al. (2003) discussed Macrogenioglottus’ position on Bufonidae and Leptodactylidae families, and retained the genus on Leptodactylidae family. Today, it belongs to the Odontophrynidae family (Frost, 2015). According to Carvalho-e-Silva et al. (2010) the species occurs from the state of Alagoas south to the state of Sao Paulo. To date, its most northern record is Coimbra (WGS 84 8.991111o S, 35.839444o W), an Atlantic Rainforest fragment located at Usina Serra Grande, municipality of Iguateguara, north of the state of Alagoas (Bourgeois, 2010). The most southern record of the species (WGS 84 24.363056o S, 48.744444o W) is in the municipality of Ribeirao Branco, state of Sao Paulo (Tiburcio et al. 2008). Both records were made using pitfall traps (Tiburcio et al. 2008). During an active search carried out in August 2014, a juvenile of Macrogenioglottus alipioi (Figure 1) was captured in Toro Forest, an Atlantic Rainforest fragment located in the Estacao Ecologica do Tapacura (WGS 84 8.060556o S, 35.1825o W). The fragment is located in the municipality of Sao Lourenco da Mata, eastern Pernambuco. The individual was active in the leaf litter, in an area characterized by the presence of large trees and little understory vegetation. The collected specimen was deposited in the Herpetological and Paleoherpetological Collection of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco Herpetology Notes, volume 9: 103-104 (2016) (published online on 28 April 2016)
