ResumoTotal litterfall was evaluated over the period from December/90 to November/91, in both a secondary tropical forest (Mata Atlantica) plot and in a slash pine (Pinus elliottii) cultivated forest plot on Santa Catarina Island, south of Brazil. The annual production values obtained in these two areas were 6,37 ton.ha-1. year-1 and 4,60 ton.ha-1. year-1, respectively. Leaf-fall showed the greatest contribution in wild and cultivated forests, i.e., 66,3% and 64,9%, respectively. The total litterfall for the slash pine forest showed an increase in the months of water deficiency (Feb-Apr/91). The Mata Atlantica showed an inverse response in the same period.
