Discordant activities between the anal and the external urethral sphincters were noted in 39 per cent of the patients. The degree of bladder dysfunction was related more to the degree of dyssynergia of the urethral than the anal sphincter. This detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia was found in 67 per cent of our patients regardless of the differences in cystometric patterns and the level of spinal injury. The importance of electromyography of the external urethral sphincter in the diagnosis of neurogenic bladder dysfunction was stressed. The management of detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia is discussed briefly. © 1982 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byKAKIZAKI H, MORIYA K, AMEDA K, SHIBATA T, TANAKA H and KOYANAGI T (2018) Diameter of the External Urethral Sphincter as a Predictor of Detrusor-Sphincter Incoordination in Children: Comparative Study of Voiding CystourethrographyJournal of Urology, VOL. 169, NO. 2, (655-658), Online publication date: 1-Feb-2003.Koyanagi T, Morita H, Takamatsu T, Taniguchi K and Shinno Y (2018) Radical Transurethral Resection of the Prostate in Male Paraplegics Revisited: Further Clinical Experience and Urodynamic Considerations for its EffectivenessJournal of Urology, VOL. 137, NO. 1, (72-76), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1987.Koyanagi T, Takamatsu T and Taniguchi K (2018) Further Characterization of the External Urethral Sphincter in Spinal Cord Injury: Study during Spinal Shock and Evolution of Responsiveness to Alpha-Adrenergic StimulationJournal of Urology, VOL. 131, NO. 6, (1122-1126), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1984.Koyanagi T, Arikado K, Takamatsu T and Tsuji I (2018) Prostatic Replux: A Simple Radiographic Sign in Recognising Dysfunctioned Voiding from External Sphincter DisordersJournal of Urology, VOL. 128, NO. 1, (93-97), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1982.Koyanagi T, Arikado K, Takamatsu T and Tsuji I (2018) Relevance of Sympathetic Dyssynergia in the Region of External Urethral Sphincter: Possible Mechanism of Voiding Dysfunction in the Absence of (Somatic) Sphincter DyssynergiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 127, NO. 2, (277-282), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1982.
