ResumoMonthly trips to Ratones Grande island (27o29'30S and 48o36'42W) were made from April 1995 to March 1996 to record amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal species. The island surface is of 194,180m², measuring 1,050 meters at its largest length and 280 meters at its widest part. It is located between the Island of Santa Catarina and the mainland. The secondary Atlantic Forest is its predominant vegetation. One amphibian species, 4 reptile, 29 native bird, 2 non-native bird, and 3 mammal species were found. The low diversity of vertebrates is mainly due to the inesxistence of fresh water springs and to human occupation and consequent environmental degradation.
