One of the great monuments in the history of recorded music is the Hyperion Schubert Edition, which presented all of Franz Schubert's known songs-more than seven hundred in all-in thirty seven volumes recorded over the course of more than a decade. The work of such luminaries as Janet Baker, Elly Ameling, Felicity Lott, Edith Mathis, Sarah Walker, Margaret Price, Thomas Alien, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Ian Bostridge, and Matthias Goerne was anchored by pianist Graham Johnson, the artistic heart and soul of this extraordinary undertaking. As if that were not enough, Hyperion went on to record a special three-disk supplement which turned out to be every bit as compelling as the Schubert set to which it was attached, if not even more so. It was designed to provide some context for Schubert's spectacular emergence as the greatest song composer the world had ever known, as well as a deeper understanding of how Schubert inspired and influenced those composers in his immediate wake. It also gave listeners a rare opportunity to hear lieder by Schubert's largely forgotten contemporaries, including both supportive friends and tense rivals. More than eighty songs by forty different composers comprised this supplement, which was initially available only as a bonus when the entire package was purchased. Fortunately, the supplement now can be purchased separately, and one scarcely can imagine a more enticing treasure trove of recordings or a more valuable resource if one wants to understand better the world of lieder and Schubert's place in that world. …
