ResumoIn order to investigate the variation characteristics of atmospheric pollution in the Olympic Village during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games period,an observation station was located on the roof of a six-floor building in the Institute of Remote Sensing Applications,Chinese Academy of Sciences, about 400 m northwest of the Beijing National Stadium. The station is called the Olympic Village station.Automated instruments which conform to international standards were used to measure the concentration of NO_2,O_3,SO_2,PM_(2.5) and PM_(10) online. The concentrations of the air pollutants NO_2,SO_2,PM_(2.5) and PM_(10) during the Olympic Games(August 8th-24th) decreased by 11.2%,46.7%,57.0% and 50.0% respectively relative to average concentrations from 1st July to 7th August. They decreased by 41.7%, 31.8%,21.6% and 28.6% compared with the concentration in the period just after the Paralympics Games(September 20th-30th).The concentrations of NO_2,O_3,PM_(2.5) and PM_(10) in the Beijing Olympic Games period decreased by 38.8%,37.2%,42.1% and 68.0% respectively compared with those in the same period of 2007.They decreased by 17.8%,27.5%,44.0% and 64.1% respectively in the Beijing Paralympics Games period compared with those in the same period of 2007.Besides strict control of the emissions, advantageous meteorological conditions were also an important factor contributing to good air quality during the Beijing Olympic Games period.
