Resumo

In Colombia, soccer played by women causes a number of social reactions, often influenced by a representation of femininity that is in accordance to the norm. This research aimed to analyze the social representations of female soccer and athletes, by using the comments made by followers of the official Facebook page of El Tiempo newspaper as a source during the participation of the team in Copa America 2014 in Ecuador. The results enabled us to identify that the athletes are questioned in terms of their femininity and sexuality. We noticed a universalist, biologicist view concerning the athletes' capacities and skills to perform a practice that has been socially regarded as masculine. Finally, the media were identified as both producer and reproducer of social representations of soccer, as well as agents of gender discrimination by not providing enough visibility to the athletes in international tournaments, as they usually do when men's soccer is involved.
