ResumoPreviewAlthough ototoxicity is a well-known side effect of aminoglycoside therapy, much about its detection and prevention remains obscure. Does the route of administration have an impact? Do certain conditions, environmental factors, or other drugs potentiate the ototoxic effects of aminoglycosides? Which is the most dramatic potentiator? How does one drug compare with another in terms of ototoxic potential? Of what value is audiometric monitoring? In this article, Drs Johnson and Kamerer answer these questions in light of the information currently available and pose others that await clarification.
