ResumoThis article reviews, analyzes, and organizes major research findings from the mental health economics literature relevant for assessing the economic burden of schizophrenia posed on the individual, the family, the community, and the entire society. Shortcomings of cost-of-illness studies based on the human capital concept are discussed, and different approaches are examined. The most recent cost estimates presented provide a powerful economic case for the need to develop strategies to improve the effectiveness of treatment for schizophrenia through biomedical and services research.
