ResumoEvery fall since 1921, the Miss America pageant 1 Miss America. Available at: http://www.missamerica.org. Accessed February 20, 2016. Google Scholar has chosen a young American woman to be Miss America. First televised in 1954, this pageant would become a yearly event which, to this day, carries an abundance of vested interest in which state will win. To this day, I can still remember the thrill of being a young girl watching Miss Arizona, Vonda Kay Van Dyke, being crowned Miss America in 1965. She was the first contestant to use ventriloquism as her talent. Over the decades, Miss America has evolved into the largest scholarship program for young women. Though I no longer watch the program, I do take note of the winners. Two winners in particular, both nurses, stand out for me. The first is Miss America 1988, Kaye Lani Rae Rafko, who used her platform as an opportunity to advocate for fellow nurses. The second is Miss Colorado, second runner-up to Miss America 2016, Kelly Johnson, who during the competition used nursing as a talent! What happened next is nothing short of phenomenal. Ellen L.
