Trauma was the most common etiology (48 per cent). Excellent results were obtained by 1-stage repair and multistage skin inlay urethroplasty. An average of 3.8 procedures per patient was required for multistage repairs versus 1.1 procedures per patient for 1-stage repair. Dilation alone averaged 1.7 procedures per patient and was successful in only 20 per cent. Dilation is unacceptable for management of most strictures in children and urethroplasty should be considered early in the treatment plan. One-stage urethroplasty, when applicable, is preferable to multistage repair. Seven children had a fractured pelvis with prostatomembranous urethral disruption, which was complete in 6 cases and partial in 1. Successful anatomical results were achieved ultimately in all of these cases. No patient who had erections preoperatively was impotent afterward. One child has been totally incontinent since the accident and 3 others have stress incontinence, only 1 of whom requires treatment. © 1981 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byDiamond D, Xuewu J, Bauer S, Cilento B, Borer J, Nguyen H, Cendron M, Rosoklija I and Retik A (2009) What is the Optimal Surgical Strategy for Bulbous Urethral Stricture in Boys?Journal of Urology, VOL. 182, NO. 4S, (1755-1758), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2009.HAFEZ A, EL-ASSMY A, DAWABA M, SARHAN O and BAZEED M (2018) LONG-TERM OUTCOME OF VISUAL INTERNAL URETHROTOMY FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF PEDIATRIC URETHRAL STRICTURESJournal of Urology, VOL. 173, NO. 2, (595-597), Online publication date: 1-Feb-2005.ROURKE K, McCAMMON K, SUMFEST J and JORDAN G (2018) Open Reconstruction of Pediatric and Adolescent Urethral Strictures: Long-term FollowupJournal of Urology, VOL. 169, NO. 5, (1818-1821), Online publication date: 1-May-2003.Monfort G, Bretheau D, Di Benedetto V and Bankole R (2018) Urethral Stricture in Children: Treatment by Urethroplasty with Bladder Mucosa GraftJournal of Urology, VOL. 148, NO. 5 Part 1, (1504-1506), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1992.Noe H (2018) Long-Term Followup of Endoscopic Management of Urethral Strictures in ChildrenJournal of Urology, VOL. 137, NO. 5, (951-953), Online publication date: 1-May-1987.Hayden L and Koff S (2018) One-Stage Membranous Urethroplasty in ChildhoodJournal of Urology, VOL. 132, NO. 2, (311-312), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1984.Kaplan G and Brock W (2018) Urethral Strictures in ChildrenJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 6, (1200-1203), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1983.
