Upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage, or bleeding arising proximal to the ligament of Treitz, continues as a challenge to medical and surgical therapy. Advances have been made in diagnosis and initial therapy, but debate continues as to which surgical procedure is best for the source of bleeding.
