Resumo

PreviewActivated charcoal has been known for two centuries to be effective in eliminating toxic compounds from the body, yet it remains a second-line therapy for most clinicians. Further understanding of its effects is causing a resurgence in its use and a challenge to other methods of substance removal in the home and hospital. Dr Donovan explains the mechanisms by which activated charcoal prevents absorption and enhances elimination of toxins, and he gives practical advice on use of charcoal in poisoning management.
