Van Valin, Jr., University of California, Davis It is very commonly asserted in Government-Binding Theory (GB) analyses of English that English, unlike (for example) Italian and Chinese, cannot have an empty category (EC) as the subject of a tensed clause (see, for example, Chomsky (1981a; 1982), Huang (1984)). That is, sentences like the following are impossible.
