Resumo

SummaryAfter having recalled the former conceptions of the limited production of cetone bodies to the last four carbon-atoms of even numbered fatty acids and of the obligatory coupled cxidation of cetone bodies and carbohydrates, the author exposes the recent acquisitions concerning the mechanism of cetogenesis. The intrahepatic beta-oxydation transforms fatty acids into two-carbon-atoms fragments which in case of cetogenesis condense two by two to form diacetic acid.Under all known circumstances cetone bodies can be used by the peripheric tissues. States of acidosis prove that the limits of peripheric utilisation have been exceeded in case of mass production of cetone bodies by the liver. This modification of the orientation of the liver function can result from a want of glucides or from a neuroendocrine perturbation : excessive pituitary action and lack of insuline secretion. Other qualitative factors can exercise their influence. The catabolism of muscular proteins seems to have a cetogenic action.
