This defect results in the impaired ability of the macrophage to release lysosomal enzymes necessary for the digestion of phagocytized bacteria. The persistent inflammatory reaction produces the characteristic granuloma of malacoplakia. Previous laboratory studies indicate that the phagocytic defect is reversible by cholinergic agonists, which led to the use of bethanechol chloride in the treatment of patients with malacoplakia, We report on 3 patients with vesical malacoplakia who were treated successfully with bethanechol chloride. © 1979 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byHurwitz G, Reimund E, Moparty K and Hellstrom W (2018) Bilateral Renal Parenchymal Malacoplakia: A Case ReportJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 1, (115-117), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1992.Long J and Althausen A (2018) Malacoplakia: A 25-Year Experience with a Review of the LiteratureJournal of Urology, VOL. 141, NO. 6, (1328-1331), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1989.Dubey N, Tavadia H and Hehir M (2018) Malacoplakia: A Case Involving Epididymis and a Case Involving a Bladder Complicated by CalculiJournal of Urology, VOL. 139, NO. 2, (359-361), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1988.Matthews P, Greenwood R, Hendry W and Cattell W (2018) Extensive Pelvic Malacoplakia: Observations on ManagementJournal of Urology, VOL. 135, NO. 1, (132-134), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1986.Witherington R, Branan W, Wray B and Best G (2018) Malacoplakia Associated with Vesicoureteral Reflux and Selective Immunoglobulin a DeficiencyJournal of Urology, VOL. 132, NO. 5, (975-977), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1984.Streem S (2018) Genitourinary Malacoplakia in Renal Transplant Recipients: Pathogenic, Prognostic and Therapeutic ConsiderationsJournal of Urology, VOL. 132, NO. 1, (10-12), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1984.Stanton M, Lynch J, Maxted W and Chun B (2018) Malacoplakia of the Bladder: A Case Report of Resolution with Bethanechol, Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole and Ascorbic AcidJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 6, (1174-1175), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1983.Stanton M and Maxted W (2018) Malacoplakia: A Study of the Literature and Current Concepts of Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and TreatmentJournal of Urology, VOL. 125, NO. 2, (139-146), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1981.
