Hydrogels: synthesis, properties, applications

While their therapeutic applicability is still under investigation, hydrogel lenses have already saved many eyes that might otherwise have been lost. Used as protective dressings, hydrogel lenses have been demonstrated to aid healing of injured or impaired corneas and retain moisture in dry-eye syndromes. They also provide almost instant relief of pain. On the horizon: a soft lens made of silicone rubber.
