Resumo

Laser light and some optical phenomena present a great potencial of application in analysis of seeds. The dynamic speckle is a phenomena that occurs mainly when laser light reaches the biological material. Nowadays, the tetrazolium test is the most important way of evaluating the viability of seeds. This work has investigated the transmission of laser light through the seed (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in order to determine the depth which is reached by the laser light in the cotyledons tissue and its interaction with the water content. The experimental procedure consist basically of iluminating 5 cut seeds with 3 different thickness (1mm, 2mm and 4mm) and 2 humidity levels (9.5% and 23.5% b.u.). The images were collected by a CCD camera and analyzed by a digital image processing. It has been observed that, the transmission is larger for great tenor of humidity, in order words, the amount of water allows the penetration of laser light in a very easy way. These results are very important for the interpretation of the biospeckle phenomena and for its modeling. Then, it will be possible to use this phenomena as a mean of evaluating the viability of seeds.
