Resumo

Diagnostic nerve blocks and local anesthetic injections have a limited but valuable contribution in defining complex presentations of back pain at any level of the vertebral column. They are sensitive to the extent that they can better locate the exact source of pain from most dorsal and superficial structures about the spine. Local anesthetic block, causing pain relief and loss of clinical signs, correlated with evidence from other studies adds anatomic specificity and enhances diagnostic capability. Precise needle placement, good clinical examination, and postinjection assessments are crucial for correct interpretation of the results obtained.
