Pre-transplant evaluation and possible urinary reconstruction are essential in these patients to achieve successful renal transplantation. Ten patients, including 7 adults, presented with congenital anomalies of the lower urinary tract that were responsible for renal failure. Percutaneous suprapubic cystostomy aided in the assessment of bladder function. Undiagnosed posterior urethral valves were found in 2 adults. Patients with exstrophy, neurogenic bladder or a contracted bladder (with augmentation cystoplasty) had urinary drainage into the bladder at the time of renal transplantation. Sometimes an imperfect bladder can be used for urinary drainage with transplantation but, otherwise, intestinal conduits are still a viable alternative. © 1982 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byTraxel E, DeFoor W, Minevich E, Reddy P, Alam S, Reeves D and Sheldon C (2018) Low Incidence of Urinary Tract Infections Following Renal Transplantation in Children With Bladder AugmentationJournal of Urology, VOL. 186, NO. 2, (667-671), Online publication date: 1-Aug-2011.Basiri A, Otoukesh H, Simforoosh N, Hosseini R and Farrokhi F (2018) Kidney Transplantation in Children With Augmentation CystoplastyJournal of Urology, VOL. 178, NO. 1, (274-277), Online publication date: 1-Jul-2007.HATCH D, KOYLE M, BASKIN L, ZAONTZ M, BURNS M, TARRY W, BARRY J, BELITSKY P and TAYLOR FOR R (2018) KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION IN CHILDREN WITH URINARY DIVERSION OR BLADDER AUGMENTATIONJournal of Urology, VOL. 165, NO. 6 Part 2, (2265-2268), Online publication date: 1-Jun-2001.NAHAS W, IIZUKA F, MAZZUCCHI E, ANTONOPOULOS I, LUCON A and ARAP S (2018) ADENOCARCINOMA OF AN AUGMENTED BLADDER 25 YEARS AFTER ILEOCECOCYSTOPLASTY AND 6 YEARS AFTER RENAL TRANSPLANTATIONJournal of Urology, VOL. 162, NO. 2, (490-491), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1999.FONTAINE E, GAGNADOUX M, NIAUDET P, BROYER M and BEURTON D (2018) RENAL TRANSPLANTATION IN CHILDREN WITH AUGMENTATION CYSTOPLASTY: LONG-TERM RESULTSJournal of Urology, VOL. 159, NO. 6, (2110-2113), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1998.Sheldon C, Gonzalez R, Burns M, Gilbert A, Buson H and Mitchell M (2018) Renal Transplantation into the Dysfunctional Bladder: The Role of Adjunctive Bladder ReconstructionJournal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 3, (972-975), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1994.Marmo Lucon A, Sabbaga E, Ianhez L, Chocair P, Pestana J and Arap S (2018) Renal Transplantation Using External Continent Urinary DiversionJournal of Urology, VOL. 151, NO. 2, (406-408), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1994.Zaragoza M, Ritchey M, Bloom D and McGuire E (2018) Enterocystoplasty in Renal Transplantation Candidates: Urodynamic Evaluation and OutcomeJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 5 Part 1, (1463-1466), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1993.Gill I, Hayes J, Hodge E and Novick A (2018) Clean Intermittent Catheterization and Urinary Diversion in the Management of Renal Transplant Recipients with Lower Urinary Tract DysfunctionJournal of Urology, VOL. 148, NO. 5 Part 1, (1397-1400), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1992.Nguyen D, Reinberg Y, Gonzalez R, Fryd D and Najarian J (2018) Outcome of Renal Transplantation after Urinary Diversion and Enterocystoplasty: A Retrospective, Controlled StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 144, NO. 6, (1349-1351), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1990.Reinberg Y, Bumgardner G and Aliabadi H (2018) Urological Aspects of Renal TransplantationJournal of Urology, VOL. 143, NO. 6, (1087-1092), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1990.Thomalla J, Mitchell M, Leapman S and Filo R (2018) Renal Transplantation into the Reconstructed BladderJournal of Urology, VOL. 141, NO. 2, (265-268), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1989.Heritier P, Perraud Y, Relave M, Barral X, Guerin C, Genin C, Gilloz A and Berthoux F (2018) Renal Transplantation and Kock Pouch: A Case ReportJournal of Urology, VOL. 141, NO. 3 Part 1, (595-596), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1989.Barnett M, Bruskewitz R, Belzer F, Sollinger H and Uehling D (2018) Ileocecocystoplasty Bladder Augmentation and Renal TransplantationJournal of Urology, VOL. 138, NO. 4 Part 1, (855-858), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1987.MacGregor P, Novick A, Cunningham R, Streem S, Kay R, Steinmuller D, Buszta C and Steinhilber D (2018) Renal Transplantation in End Stage Renal Disease Patients with Existing Urinary DiversionJournal of Urology, VOL. 135, NO. 4, (686-688), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1986.Barnett M, Bruskewitz R, Glass N, Sollinger H, Uehling D and Belzer F (2018) Long-term Clean Intermittent Self-catheterization in Renal Transplant RecipientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 134, NO. 4, (654-657), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1985.Glass N, Uehling D, Sollinger H and Belzer F (2018) Renal Transplantation Using Ileal Conduits in 5 CasesJournal of Urology, VOL. 133, NO. 4, (666-668), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1985.Flechner S, Conley S, Brewer E, Benson G and Corriere J (2018) Intermittent Clean Catheterization: An Alternative to diversion in Continent Transplant Recipients with Lower Urinary Tract DysfunctionJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 5, (878-881), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1983.Duckett J (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 5, (881-881), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1983.
