Resumo

At a time when Portuguese journalism knew some difficulties due to the censorship imposed by the dictatorship of the Estado Novo , which reduced the autonomy of journalists, violating some of the values that contributed to the imaginary identity of their profession, they discussed, at that time, the situation described in the pages of their journals or trade unions. In this work, it is tried, through a qualitative analysis and historical-cultural of the discourse, to describe and to analyse how the restrictions to the freedom of press and censorship were discussed by the journalists of Portugal on the pages of their trade union newspapers Boletim do Sindicato Nacional dos Jornalistas (1941)(1942)(1943)(1944)(1945) and Jornalismo (1967)(1968)(1969)(1970)(1971), also from Sindicato, as well as in newspaper journalistic and cultural Gazeta Literária (1952)(1953)(1954)(1955)(1956)(1957)(1958)(1959)(1960)(1961)(1962)(1963)(1964)(1965)(1966)(1967)(1968)(1969)(1970)(1971), from Associação de Jornalistas e Homens de Letras do Porto. It was concluded that the editors and collaborators of these journals understood to have right to the free press, mainly because only then could defend certain values inherent to their profession and, at the same time, give it more dignity and seriousness. However, due to the established regime, they could not always speak about the matter with the desired autonomy.
