These patients were evaluated to determine subsequent rates of disease progression and patient survival. Mean followup was 5 years. Results revealed that 1) residual tumor present 12 months after therapy does not disappear, 2) advance in tumor grade occurred in 19 of 39 patients (49 per cent) with positive biopsies after therapy, 3) patients who had positive biopsies after therapy had a greater chance for disease progression (11 of 39 cases or 28 per cent) than patients with negative biopsies (4’ of 29 cases or 14 per cent) and 4) hormonal therapy started when a positive biopsy was obtained appears to delay onset of disease progression. © 1980 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByStone N, Ramin S, Wesson M, Stock R, Unger P and Klein G (2018) Laparoscopic Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection Combined with Real-time Interactive Transrectal Ultrasound Guided Transperineal Radioactive Seed Implantation of the ProstateJournal of Urology, VOL. 153, NO. 5, (1555-1560), Online publication date: 1-May-1995.Marinelli D, Shanberg A, Tansey L, Sawyer D, Syed N and Puthawala A (2018) Followup Prostate Biopsy in Patients with Carcinoma of the Prostate Treated By 192Iridium Template Irradiation Plus Supplemental External Beam RadiationJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 3 Part 2, (922-925), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1992.Kabalin J, Hodge K, McNeal J, Freiha F and Stamey T (2018) Identification of Residual Cancer in the Prostate Following Radiation Therapy: Role of Transrectal Ultrasound Guided Biopsy and Prostate Specific AntigenJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 2 Part 1, (326-331), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1989.Stamey T, Kabalin J and Ferrari M (2018) Prostate Specific Antigen in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate.
