Resumo

Rapid Bioassessment Protocols for rivers (RBP) are tools that consider the integrated analysis of lotic ecosystems based on an easy, simple and fast methodology. RBPs include the recording of habitat characteristics for environmental quality assessments based on a visual inspection of the area. The present study utilized rapid bioassessment protocols in two basins in River Guandu (Espirito Santo). Thirty-five sites of two streams were selected based on a criterion of ease of access and spatial distribution. Scores were given according to the RBP to variables concerning vegetation, water quality characteristics, and sedimentological features of the river channel that play a direct role in the establishment of aquatic communities and in the quality of the habitat. Nineteen sites were assessed in the basin of Ribeirao Arrependido, three of which were ranked as unaltered (15.8%), 15 were altered (78.9%), and only one site was classified as impacted (5.3%). In the basin of Ribeirao Empossado, the number of unaltered, altered and impacted sites was four (25%), nine (56%) and three (19%), respectively. The two basins were significantly similar in soil usage and occupation, as well as in terms of the physical impacts to the river channel. No significant difference was observed in environmental quality between the two basins
