ResumoDramatic advances in the understanding of the factors that control normal patency of the ductus arteriosus during fetal life and that allow its closure after birth have resulted in major new therapeutic approaches to the management of infants with congenital heart disease. Infusion of PGE1 and PGE2 have been used in several congenital malformations to maintain a dilated ductus arteriosus, and indomethacin has been used to constrict a persistently patent ductus arteriosus.
