Resumo

The haematological and biochemical changes associated with an experimental haemolytic anaemia in poultry produced by a single injection of phenyl hydrazine chloride solution are described. Anaemia resulted within 24 h of injection, initially normocytic and normochromic, latterly macrocytic and normochromic. Alterations were observed in serum protein, potassium and cholesterol levels. This confirms previous haematological observations and develops biochemical findings. Further work will be required to show whether estimations of serum potassium can be reliably used to differentiate between haemorrhagic and haemolytic anaemia in the fowl.
