ResumoThe development of laparoscopic surgery has involved technical and medical innovations over a period of 200 years. One was not possible without the other. It has been the close interaction between technology and the medical-surgical innovators that permitted the rapid evolution of laparoscopic surgery during the last two decades. The consequence of this has been a shift of the purely disease-oriented surgical management to a more patient-oriented approach.
