Resumo Marianne North (1830-90) e uma figura enigmatica na “arte” e na “ciencia” da Inglaterra vitoriana. A maioria dos historiadores da arte e da ciencia a veria como marginal nos dois campos. Este trabalho nao passa de uma tentativa preliminar de por a obra desta artista, viajante e escritora do seculo dezenove, no contexto dos trabalhos recentes sobre genero em geografia, arte botânica, historia natural e ciencia. Como ficara claro, trata-se de um exercicio essencialmente exploratorio e Marianne North nao e facil de ser situada nesses contextos. Abstract Marianne North (1830-1890) is an enigmatic figure in “art” and “science” in Victorian England. Most historians of art and of science would regard her as marginal in both of these fields. The present paper is no more than a preliminary attempt to set the work of this nineteenth century female artist, traveler, and author into the context of recent writing on gender in geography, botanical art, natural history and science. As will become evident, this is essentially an exploratory exercise and Marianne North does not fit easily into these contexts.
