ResumoThe rate of recurrence of gastroesophageal reflux is unacceptably high in patients with severe reflux esophagitis who have undergone the routine Belsey transthoracic reconstruction of the cardia. For this reason, the standard operation in this group is contraindicated. Addition of the esophagus-lengthening gastroplasty technique of Collis to the Belsey operation, however, provides a valuable surgical alternative in patients with peptic esophageal strictures. This report describes a simplified technique of performing the combined Collis-Belsey procedure with the GIA surgical stapler.
