ResumoDuring June and July 1944, a brutal battle raged on the island of Saipan. In the wake of battle, military vehicles were left strewn on and around the island, some of which remain there to this day. Three partially submerged US M4 Sherman tanks can be found off the western coast of Saipan, where they became stranded 70 years ago. This chapter presents a portion of the archaeological and historical data collected to aid in the assessment and monitoring of these WWII era tanks for the preservation and enjoyment of present and future generations.
